While the goal of service to others is not praise, it was exciting to recognize those Trinity College School students who have gone the extra mile in their volunteer roles at the annual Service Learning Awards on Thursday, May 23rd. In welcoming everyone to the event, Ms. Kim Vojnov, director of service learning programs, noted that this year has seen a full complement of service activities in the Senior School, through weekly co-curricular groups, international trips, weekend activities and, of course, the Week Without Walls in December. “It is incredible to give back to our community in this capacity,” she noted.

Ms. Vojnov thanked the faculty and staff who make these programs possible, as well as the service stewards (Nya F., Basim I. and Jada J.) and the team in the Clinton T. Sayers ’80 Service Learning Office: Mr. Peter Mao, Ms. Lisa Redmond, Ms. Katie Traugott, Mr. Conor Eustace and Mr. Calvin Jeffrey.

The ceremony included the recognition, through the presentation of ties, pins and plaques, of various levels of service commitment. Attaining the Bronze level (80 hours of service) were 56 students, including nine repeat recipients. Reaching the Silver level (120 hours of service) were 35 students, including two repeat recipients. And 23 were honoured at the Gold level, for attaining more than 200 hours of service. Two students – Nya F. and Terry W. – were repeat recipients, earning them Distinction awards for service.

Additionally, 131 students were recognized for holding stewardship positions around the School, including 38 repeat recipients. Stewards assist in various capacities, such as tutoring and supporting co-curricular programs, and many of the students honoured hold multiple stewardship positions.

Three individual awards were also presented for service initiatives. The E.B. Heaven Library Award went to Sarah E.; the Armour Memorial Prize for the editors of The Record yearbook went to Nya F. and Emma X.; and the Pat Moss Society Award, for a student who embodies the mission of “youth helping youth” went to Terry W.

Congratulations to all of the award recipients, and indeed to every student for giving their time and energy to service learning programs. “Your reach has been great this year, and you have collectively contributed an incredible amount of volunteering; our community is better for it. When it comes to helping others, it is hoped that you will continue to try new things, and to find ways to contribute to causes that are important to you,” said Ms. Vojnov. “We are so proud of you. No matter how you give back to the School or the greater community, we thank you for being terrific representatives of Trinity College School.”
