Remembering H. Michael Burns ’56
H. Michael Burns ’56 was among Trinity College School's greatest champions. His contributions and accolades are numerous: Michael was co-head prefect of the class of 1956; he was acutely engaged in school governance for over 50 years, beginning in 1971; he was actively involved in every major fundraising campaign as both donor and leader, including serving as honorary co-chair of the School's 150th Anniversary Campaign and honorary co-chair of the forthcoming Unlock Remarkable campaign; and he was the chair of the TCS Governing Body overseeing the historic introduction of co-education.
Simply put, Michael exemplified the TCS creed of purpose and service, and our School has been forever enhanced by his leadership.
Michael was on campus in spring 2023 for the dedication of a portrait of him that was hung in Osler Hall that summer. During the dedication service, Head of Trinity College School Stuart Grainger remarked, “Everyone in this chapel, whether you know it or not, has been positively impacted by Michael. He has left an indelible impact on our school.”
We will miss his friendship and guidance, but are thankful that he knew how much we appreciated the time and energy he gave to TCS. After learning of Michael's passing on June 10, 2023, the flag near the Memorial Cross was lowered to half-mast in his memory.
The Burns Atlantic National Scholarship
Established by H. Michael Burns ’56 in memory of his father Charles Burns ’25, the Burns Atlantic National Scholarship provides financial assistance for a promising young person from Atlantic Canada to attend Trinity College School. To date, it has enabled 15 students to attend TCS. Michael regularly stayed in touch with past scholarship recipients and took great pride in following their post-secondary path. He remained continually passionate about helping future generations of students access TCS. Pictured is Mr. Burns with recent Burns Atlantic Scholar Sean Kontak ’22.
