On Friday, May 1st, Trinity College School celebrated its 155th birthday, with members of the school community gathering online from around the world to honour this milestone. TCS was founded in 1865 by Revd. William A. Johnson, who wanted to create a school for his own sons and a few other boys at his parsonage in Weston, Ontario. Revd. Johnson imparted his own love of science and the natural world to his students, notably Sir William Osler, first head boy of TCS. Three years later, the growing school moved to larger quarters in Port Hope, Ontario, where it stands today as a leading co-educational day and boarding school for just under 600 students.
The 155th birthday celebration began with a message from Headmaster Stuart Grainger and included, among other things, a series of four videos that were shared with the entire school community. Canon Don Aitchison prepared a brief history of TCS, while other videos included birthday greetings from alumni and current families, the singing of the school hymn, and even a special appearance by Trina the Bear, our school mascot.
At 11:00 a.m., students were encouraged to have a cupcake or other treat ready with a birthday candle to blow out. And at 2:00 p.m. Senior School students gathered online with their houses to take part in some fun challenges.
While we look forward to the time when we can gather in person, the birthday celebration was a lovely way to share our school pride and bring us together in spirit around the globe!
