This fall, the music department of Trinity College School was immeasurably enhanced with the donation of a special and historic instrument – a Chickering baby grand piano that belonged to Hagood Hardy ’55.

Hardy, who attended TCS from 1953-1955, was affectionately referred to by his classmates as “our music man.” A revered band-leader at TCS, Hardy’s musical career grew to international scope, and he became one of Canada’s most celebrated vibraphonists and contemporary composers. 1971’s The Homecoming was one of his most famous works, earning critical and commercial acclaim. Hardy won Juno Awards in 1976 and 1977, and was named to the Order of Canada in 1992.

Hagood Hardy died in 1997, but his spirit has lived on at TCS. Notably, the class of 1955 celebrated him on the occasion of their 50th reunion in May 2005 with the donation of a marimba to the School in his memory. Our students have benefited from the use of this special instrument for over 15 years, and it continues to fill our halls with music.

We are honoured to have the gift of this cherished piano and extend our heartfelt thanks to the Hardy family for their generous donation. The piano has a new home in the John Bassett ’82 Studio, and will be well-used as the School’s primary instrument for private lessons.
