Students learn the joy of giving back on Service Saturday

Who knew giving back could be so much fun? The students of Trinity College School learned this message during the second of the School’s three formal Service Saturdays, on February 1st. Working with three of our long-time community partners, Senior School students enjoyed a day of laughter and smiles, while also making a difference in our local community.

A group of students headed just across the street to visit our friends at Empire Crossing Retirement Suites for a morning spent decorating cookies, playing Pictionary, completing giant crossword puzzles and, most importantly, socializing with the residents. The students had a great time and returned to campus with wonderful memories of their time with our neighbours.

Over in Cobourg, a small but dedicated group lent a hand at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, helping to organize items that had been donated to the store, the proceeds of which help with local housing projects. And there were nothing but smiles for the group of students who spent the day at Paulmac’s Pets at the Northumberland Mall, running a dog wash in support of Northumberland Humane Society (NHS). In addition to meeting many members of the public, students had the best time bathing dogs large and small, including an energetic pack of Dalmatians! NHS General Manager Kate Lennan emailed following the event to express her appreciation for the wonderful job the volunteers had done, noting, “Your students raised $415 for the animals in our care and we cannot thank you enough!”

Thank you to the members of our service learning team who helped to organize and/or chaperone the service sites. We’re looking forward to the final formal Service Saturday of the school year, planned for April 4th.
