Taking a musical stroll down memory lane

The Trinity College School community had the chance to look back on musical theatre performances of the past as our musicians, singers and dancers presented TCS Classics Revisited the evenings of February 26th, 27th and 28th in the Dick and Jane LeVan Theatre.

Under the leadership of musical directors Mr. Jeff Biggar and Canon Don Aitchison, and directed by Mr. Bill Walker and Ms. Jane Morton, this musical revue brought together talents from across the TCS arts program for an evening of Broadway hits. The pit band featured TCS music instructors Michael Beauclerc and Tyson Galloway, along with student-musicians Rita Han, Grace Lu, Ben Ma and Sara Yang. And the chorus of singers who performed in group and solo numbers throughout the evening were Acassia Arnaud, Sophia Bonham-Carter, Bria Chalovich, Camryn Chalovich, Valentina Conrad, Kyra Fingas, Zoe Fingas, Carly Lin, Kyle Munns and Summer Xia. The TCS Dance Troupe, including Nita Das, Waverley DiNova, Subaru Fujimoto, Liesl Ge, Ashley Jung, Lily Lai, Amélie Lynn and Megan Zammit, performed choreography designed by troupe leader Ms. Stephanie Booth, as well as Ms. Rachel McHolm and Ms. Maria Velasquez-Labrecque.

Narrator Alastair Gray led the audience through the program, which kicked off with a medley of tunes from Little Shop of Horrors. Keeping with the vintage theme, the ensemble moved into a trio of songs from Grease, before taking on the hilarious I Hate Men from Shakespeare-inspired Kiss Me Kate. The first act culminated with Poor Wandering One from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, Pirates of Penzance

The crowd was energized by the second act opening of Oh What a Beautiful Morning from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma and the fun kept going with Just a Coupl’a Sisters from Nunsense. Heaven Help My Heart from Chess; Think of Meryl Streep from Fame; and two songs from the musical Hair allowed our singers to take centre stage, before the ensemble once again came together to close out the evening with the rousing Monty Python tune Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Spamalot.

Working behind the scenes to make each evening a success were stage manager Rachel Higgs, assistant stage manager Isabelle Ciano, and the crew of Evelyn Maguire and Anastasiia Solovei. Mr. Christian McFadden and Mr. Victor Svenningson ’74 once again brought their expertise to sound and lighting, respectively, supported by Laura Baleanu and Jocelyn Ehlers. Mr. Dale Heffernan constructed the set, Amelia Maggi oversaw costumes, and Valentina Conrad handled make-up.

Thank you to everyone involved in providing a showcase for our talented students to shine!
