In Canada and around the world, June has been designated as Pride Month to commemorate protests that took place outside the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York in late June 1969. The Stonewall Riots, led by queer and trans people of colour, became a watershed moment in the fight for equal rights for members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

At Trinity College School, the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) has been active in recent years, offering support and awareness of issues facing LGBTQ2S+ people, and particularly youth. Last year, the club held a bake sale to raise funds to purchase a Pride flag, with the intention of raising the flag at the School during Pride Month this year. The flag was raised this week and we look forward to hosting a proper ceremony, once our campus re-opens and the whole student body can be back together in person. The Pride flag, with its various colours, reflects the immense diversity and the unity of the LGBTQ2S+ community. This international symbol for LGBTQ2S+ pride can now be seen flying proudly at TCS. The members of the GSA should be incredibly proud of the work they have done thus far and future endeavours they have planned to continue their work of awareness, inclusivity and action.

Ms. Kerri Dunn, faculty advisor to the GSA said, “I am so proud to support the committed students of the TCS GSA. This is a student-driven TCS club that aims to provide awareness, advocacy and kindness for all and to all. It honours our differences, our similarities and works to shine a light on the need for acceptance for all, and specifically LGBTQ2S+ youth.

“For June, we will celebrate Pride and the members of our GSA club are going to bring us knowledge and insight to help us become better allies and to spread the message that no matter who you love or how you identify, you should feel equal, safe, proud and loved.”
