Academic Insights: TCS Guidance Department

The Trinity College School guidance department endeavours to support the growth and development of every student. Students have access to specialized counsellors who can support them with their academic and post-secondary planning as well as their social-emotional development and health.

How do we do this?
Through group and individual meetings at every grade level, our team of guidance professionals:

  • Encourages students to think about their values
  • Grows awareness of educational pathways
  • Educates about planning for the future
  • Facilitates social/emotional understanding, development and education

We understand the importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment where students feel welcomed and affirmed. In addition, we are committed to working closely with parents and faculty to ensure a highly integrated approach to student support.

Academic & post-secondary counsellors will support students with things such as:

  • Course selection
  • Enrichment opportunities
  • Summer programs
  • Goal setting (personal, academic and career development)
  • Post-secondary and scholarship applications

Social-emotional counsellors will offer students the opportunity to explore, understand and work through personal issues such as:

  • Self-esteem
  • Stress
  • Anger, sadness
  • Motivation, perfectionism
  • Conflicts with friends, roommates, family
  • Grief, loss
  • Identity (race, sexuality, gender)

What is coming up in the guidance department this fall?

  • Post-Secondary Admissions Session for families and guardians of Grade 12 students on Thursday, October 1st from 9:00-10:00 a.m. (ET). This session will outline the post-secondary process, important timelines and support available. The Zoom link is available here. The session will be recorded for those unable to attend.
  • Post-Secondary Representative Visits: Representative visits will be happening virtually during the students’ flex periods this year (1:55-2:25 p.m.), giving them the opportunity to better understand the variety of options out there and to begin (or continue to) explore pathways. Parents can find the dates at www.tcs.on.ca/calendar. Students can find the dates and links posted in Edsby. Upcoming virtual visits include:
  • September 28th: Laurentian University and Trent University
  • September 29th: Huron at Western
  • October 1st: Fleming College and  Griffith University (Australia)
  • October 2nd: Acadia University and Dickson College (U.S.)
  • Social-emotional counsellors have been working with students and staff in developing social-emotional and relational skills. Read more about this work here.

Below are the guidance counsellor assignments for this academic year. Parents are welcome to reach out to anyone in the school community, including guidance counsellors, to ask questions or address concerns they might have. The more we know, the better we can support students.

We look forward to working students and their families during their time at TCS.
