Lunar New Year ushers in the Year of the Ox

Lunar New Year took a different form this year at Trinity College School. As the school community showed their spirit by dressing up in red, celebrations took place over the course of February 11th and 12th.

Organized by the Cultural Awareness Group (CAG), during advisor meetings on Wednesday, students watched a video about Lunar New Year celebrations that take place around the world and another explaining the different Chinese zodiac signs. This year is the Year of the Ox. Based on these videos, a Kahoot was played as an interactive activity for each advisor group. Other videos were watched as well that highlighted celebrations in various Asian countries and the meaning behind red envelopes, the food, and reference to celebrating Lunar New Year in the USA, which was then followed by a couple of discussion questions.

The CAG team also put together a Lantern Riddle Contest in celebration of Lunar New Year. Clues were attached to paper lanterns around the Cirne Commons and pairs were welcome to answer the clues by filling out a form.

The TCS culinary team put together a spread of Asian food during Tuesday’s lunch and Friday’s dinner. And on Thursday, students wore red in honour of both Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day.

A big thank you to CAG, the culinary team, and everyone who was involved to pull off a great Lunar New Year celebration. TCS wishes everyone celebrating a wonderful year ahead.
