It was a day of celebration, as students and staff shared their love for the “School on the Hill” on Friday, April 30th, one day prior to Trinity College School’s birthday. On May 1, 1865, TCS was officially incorporated under the leadership of the Revd. William A. Johnson at his parish in Weston, Ontario; the School would move to its current location in Port Hope three years later.
Friday’s events began with a virtual morning chapel service led by Canon Don Aitchison and the school prefects, with appearances by Headmaster Stuart Grainger and chapel organist, Mr. Randy Mills. Through trivia, they told the story of the School’s founding and key details of “Father” Johnson’s life. Then a birthday video brought the fun, with images of students and staff dancing and holding happy birthday signs.
In the Junior School, students wore clothing and created Google Meet backgrounds on the theme of “celebration.” Each class created a fun song or other tribute to the School, and students submitted individual photos and videos of themselves wishing TCS a “Happy Birthday!”
Later in the day, Senior School students had the opportunity to witness a virtual presentation of the Centennial Lecture, part of the Mac Campbell Lecture Series. The annual tradition of hosting guest speakers on the School’s birthday began in 1965. This year’s special guests were alumnus Olivia Apps ’16 and Ghislaine Landry, of the Canadian women’s rugby sevens national team, who are currently in preparations for the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. For the small group of boarders currently residing on campus, the day concluded with cupcakes and fun activities.
