Trio of Grade 12 students honoured by town for volunteerism

A trio of Trinity College School students was recognized for contributions to the local community and beyond during the Municipality of Port Hope’s annual Civic Awards ceremony on Thursday, May 13th. Each year, the Clinton Sayers ’80 Service Learning Office at TCS nominates students for Civic Awards, and this year the names of graduating students Loretta Hu, Nolan Finn and Michael Yip were put forward.

Loretta has earned a Distinction award for her commitment to service learning at TCS, and has been a steward in the library and in the science department, where she provides academic help in biology. An active member of the School’s Cultural Awareness Group, she played a key role in Lunar New Year celebrations. And on an international level, she has volunteered with the China Social Assistance Foundation – SPARK Global Online Education program, helping underprivileged students in China.

Nolan is a school prefect who assists regularly with the School’s athletics program, has served as a sacristan and is a member of the admissions MasterKey team. Among Nolan’s involvements, he has been an enthusiastic volunteer through the School’s community partnership with Northumberland Big Brothers Big Sisters. On a weekly basis and through the annual Week Without Walls initiative, Nolan has served as a role model, offering friendship and organizing activities for the children who benefit from this program.

Michael has gone well beyond the School’s formal service requirements, stepping up to serve as a part of the admissions MasterKey team, providing academic help to his peers as a math steward, and working on initiatives such as the annual Big Tree Plant on campus. Throughout his four years at TCS, Michael has been a regular and dedicated volunteer at the nearby Extendicare long-term care home, where he has developed strong bonds with residents and made a lasting impression.

The students were honoured, along with other local residents in areas including community service, athletics, arts and more, during an online presentation hosted on the local Cogeco station and available online at: www.porthope.ca/en/your-municipal-government/civic-awards.aspx.

Congratulations to Loretta, Nolan and Michael for your dedication, leadership and kindness!
