Chapel Choir returns, plus ringers stage Halloween concert

Monday, October 25th was a banner day for chapel music at Trinity College School, as the Chapel Choir returned to in-person singing for morning services, and the Johnson Ringers revived their annual Halloween concert.

Twenty-two choristers were spread across the front of Memorial Chapel to provide musical responses to Fr. Don’s chanting, and to sing O Canada, the School Hymn and a motet, for the first time since March 2020. An equal number of female and male singers makes this year’s ensemble perfectly balanced, and their sound filled the chapel, in spite of masks. The motet was a choir favourite: Laudate Nomen Domini (Praise the name of the Lord) by the 16th century English composer, Christopher Tye.

Monday evening, the 18-member Johnson Ringers senior handbell ensemble rang five seasonal favourites, including melodies from Phantom of the Opera and Ghostbusters, for an early celebration of Halloween. Grade 10 pianist Eric Jin also starred in an excellent performance of Prelude in C-Minor by the 19th century composer and virtuoso, Frédéric Chopin. An enthusiastic and appreciative audience of students and adults from the community gave lots of encouragement to the ringers. The ringers worked hard to learn the repertoire early in this new academic year, and have become experts at setting up and taking down a great deal of equipment, generously donated by the TCS Parents’ Guild. Special thanks to Ms. Holly Fournier (assistant to the head of Senior School) for preparing a suitably-themed poster for the concert.
