Halloween celebration casts a bewitching spell

Trinity College School students and staff really gave us pumpkin to talk about as they celebrated Halloween on Friday, October 30th with events across campus.

Even before the big day, Senior School students had a gourd time snapping photos of their advisor groups to win the “Spookiest Location on Campus” contest. Dr. Vincenza Pontieri’s advisees made good use of the science labs (and the skeleton model) to take the win! As well, during the week, many advisor groups and houses spent time carving and/or painting jack-o-lanterns that added to the festive feel at TCS.

Friday morning began with back-to-back chapel services for the Senior School, allowing for a more traditional feel to the celebration. There were lots of costumes on display inspired by hit TV series like Squid Game and Schitt’s Creek, a buffet of food costumes – from tacos to corn on the cob – and a set of Santas even made an early appearance! In the afternoon, the prefects organized even more excitement with a Just Dance competition and a hunt for hidden candy. Everyone had a fa-boo-lous time!

At the Junior School, the Grade 5 students took part in an annual tradition by visiting some of the administration offices to trick or treat – including meeting Headmaster Stuart “Angus Young” Grainger outside the chapel to receive candy. There was a howl lot of fun inside the Boulden House classrooms throughout the day, culminating in the costume contest, held outdoors under sunny skies. This year’s themes included a bevy of inflatable costumes and some “out of the box” designs such as an x-ray machine.

A shout-out to the TCS Parents’ Guild for organizing the Halloween treat fundraiser, which saw students and staff goblin up more than 500 pre-ordered treat packages that were distributed on Friday. Candy wrappers from throughout the festivities were able to be collected and disposed of in a special Terracycle Wrapper Recycle Bin purchased by the School, making for a more eco-friendly Halloween.

Finally, on Sunday, a group of Senior School students led by Trinity Students for Social Justice (TSSJ) went door-to-door in our local neighbourhood to collect non-perishable donations for local food banks. The 22 students collected four full shopping carts for the Halloween for Hunger campaign. Special thanks to our neighbours for their generosity and to Food Basics for loaning us the carts. In the week following Halloween, TCS students will take the food to our local food bank and help to sort and stock it as part of their weekly service learning commitment. Fang-tastic work, TSSJ!
