Alumnus shares filmmaking insights with students

Trinity College School was pleased to welcome back alumnus Jazz Pitcairn ’17 for a virtual workshop with students on Wednesday, February 9th. Jazz is a writer, producer and director who has already amassed an impressive resume in just a few years in the industry.

While a student, Jazz was already immersed in the creative process, being nominated for “Best Local Filmmaker” at the Cayman Islands International Film Festival in 2016 and earning Distinction and the 1970 Award for outstanding participation in the arts at TCS. She went on to graduate from New York University’s prestigious film school, attaining her B.F.A. in film and television in 2020. With internships at CNBC, Bravo, HBO and A24 under her belt, Jazz has worked as assistant to director Silas Howard on the Apple+ hit series Dickinson and as a writer’s assistant on the award-winning HBO comedy series, A Black Lady Sketch Show. More recently, she served as co-writer and co-producer of the short film, Bread and Circuses.

Our students were fortunate to have Jazz share her insights on the creative process, from concept to filming, with them. The arts committee – Neyha Billing, Ava Becker, Isolde Ardies and Bria Chalovich – and film festival organizers Phillip Whan-Tong and Hudson Brown had this to say: “We were really impressed with how many people came out to hear Jazz speak! The audience had some great questions for Jazz, who had tons of great advice and experience from school and the film industry to draw on!”

This was the first of two planned workshops which have been timed to help students prepare for the upcoming TCS Film Festival. Philip helped to rejuvenate the festival last year for Arts Week, and is encouraging his peers to get involved. The festival will take place in May, and the deadline for students to submit entries is Friday, April 22nd.
