BookIt brings readers together

While most of us think of libraries as quiet spaces devoted to individual reading and research, in reality today’s libraries are important forums for community building and social interaction. The Senior School library at Trinity College was thrilled to be able to host its annual BookIt event in person this year, allowing readers to gather together in celebration of the written word.

Originally planned for January, due to pandemic restrictions in place at that time the event was bumped forward to Saturday, February 26th. And it was worth the wait!

Beginning at noon, 30 students and eight staff members took part in BookIt, with 23 remaining the full 12 hours until midnight. Hourly breaks included door prizes, a round of the “Bring Your Own Book” game, and the ever-popular Just Dance. Participants enjoyed a delicious dinner of hamburgers, poutine and ice cream sundaes.

And, of course, the focus was on reading. Over 11,000 pages were read across a host of genres and formats, including print fiction and non-fiction, ebooks and even web comics.

Especially after the event being online last year, students and staff really appreciated the opportunity to come together as a reading community. Much was read, and much fun was had!
