Celebrating students’ commitment to service

In a celebration of Trinity College School’s mission of developing habits of the heart and mind for a life of purpose and service, Senior School students’ commitment to giving back was honoured at the annual Service Awards, held in the Dick and Jane LeVan Theatre on Monday, May 30th. Students were excited to receive their awards in person, as the School recognized achievements in the service learning, stewardship and peer mentor programs, as well as presenting some individual awards.

The ceremony began with the Armour Memorial Award, presented annually to the editor of The Record yearbook. This year’s recipient was Merryn Hamilton. This was followed by the Pat Moss Society Award, which goes to a student who embodies the mission of “youth serving youth.” Isabelle Browne was recognized for her contributions both outside of school as well as at TCS, including her work at camp and assisting with several stewardships.

The peer mentors from each Senior School house are tasked with serving as resources for their fellow students, listening to them and helping them to access available supports when needed. This year’s group of 23 peer mentors each received a letter of congratulations from the Westlake family, which sponsors this recognition in memory of their sons, Andrew ’95 and Michael ’98; the letter indicated that the Westlakes have made a donation to a local charity in honour of the mentors.

Stewards are students who hold positions of responsibility in various areas of the School, such as assisting in academic departments or lending support to operational departments including the IT help desk, school store and communications. This year, 76 students earned ties honouring their first year as a steward, and five students received a pin denoting two years of stewardship commitment.

The final portion of the ceremony featured recognition of service learning hours attained by students at three levels: bronze (80-119 hours), silver (120-199 hours) and gold (200+ hours). Attaining the bronze level were 24 students, including 12 new and 12 returning recipients; the bronze level is recognized with the presentation of a service tie. Earning silver level service pins were six first-time recipients and eight repeat recipients.

Seven students earned gold, or Distinction, in service and were presented with a glass trophy commemorating this significant achievement. They are Isabelle Browne, Samuel Kabwika, Charlotte Lynn, Oliver Lynn, Lauren Jackson, Jamil Velji and Michael Moreau.

Congratulations to all of the award recipients, and a special note of thanks to the staff who lead our service learning programs. Not only do these individuals role model the importance of giving back, but they do so by exemplifying key habits of heart and mind including compassion, perseverance and integrity.
