Opening Week 2023 ends on a positive, energetic note
  • Group of six students

Trinity College School students and staff wrapped up a wonderful opening week to the 2023-2024 academic year that saw a warm welcome extended to our new and returning Bears!

As of Thursday, September 7th, when new boarding students moved onto campus, the full student body was in place. This year, TCS has an enrolment of 593 young people, including 105 in the Junior School (Grades 5-8), 210 Senior School day (Grade 9-12) students and 278 boarders.

“The community at TCS sprung to life this week!” said Head of Trinity College School Stuart Grainger. “The energy and positivity on campus in this first week was palpable and soul-lifting. What a privilege to be in a community surrounded by so many caring, thoughtful and enthusiastic students and staff.”

In the Junior School, Friday, September 8th was a chance to jump into the co-curricular program, with students taking part in a rotation of activities to learn about options for the fall term.

Also on Friday, Senior School students learned more about their co-curricular options during a presentation and in advisor meetings. In the afternoon, students took part in the time-honoured tradition of Ruckus. This year, the entire Grade 12 class joined with the prefects to organize an afternoon of fun, community-building activities for the 10 Senior School houses. Following lunch, students gathered with their houses for “pep rallies” to get into the spirit of the day. Then, starting at Orchard/Wright House and working southward across campus, there was a parade with each successive house joining in the procession until all students walked together to the main Centennial Gates. Each year, a highlight of Ruckus is when the gates are opened to officially invite everyone onto campus, and this year no exception.

Flooding through the gates, students headed off to specifically designated fields for each grade from 9 through 11, where the Grade 12 students led activities. Initiatives included blob tag, musical towels (a variation of musical chairs), potato sack and relay races, charades, Twister, limbo and more! Then it was over to the area near the volleyball courts where a giant inflatable slip & slide was set up to get everyone cooled off, followed by Freezie treats.

The excitement was just beginning, as Friday evening saw the residential assistants hosting field games, including volleyball, spike ball, Jenga, corn hole and Kan Jam, as well as music and snacks for all to enjoy. Then, on Saturday, following morning co-curriculars, Senior School students took to the outdoor courts in the afternoon for the annual House Volleyball tournament. These events were not only fun for all, but students relished the chance to spend time with old friends and to make new friendships, as well as getting to know our caring staff better.

Thank you to everyone who helped to organize and oversee these special community events.
