Rigby and Brent House earn Green Cup honours
  • Green Cup Presentation

A highlight of the end of each academic year at Trinity College School is the awarding of the Green Cup Challenge trophy to Senior School houses who have aimed higher in promoting good habits and raising awareness of actions we can all take in supporting sustainability. The presentation of the trophy, during morning chapel service on Thursday, May 23rd, was also a chance to look back on a year of doing “more good” for the environment.

Houses accumulate Green Cup points through a range of initiatives, including tree planting, used clothing drives, waste clean-ups, as well as providing green tips and ideas. Among the activities through which houses can earn Green Cup points is the annual Recycle Challenge, where our dedicated housekeeping team tracks who is sorting their waste and recycling correctly, according to our local “Recycle Right” system. The bins were checked six times over the course of the year, and the most correct sorting was achieved by Ketchum House (72%) and Rigby House (86%). This is an area where we can all improve, campus-wide.

Another fun way to obtain house Green Cup points is through Earth Day activities, including the annual “Recycled Sculpture” contest. House reps are tasked with creating a sculpture of an endangered species using recyclable materials such as plastic containers, cans and paper. This year’s contest was held in conjunction with Arts Week, and was a joint effort between Trinity Environmental Action Council, Cultural Awareness Group and the Arts Council. In first place was Burns House, with their sculpture of an orangutan, with Wright House in the runner-up spot for their echidna sculpture.

When the final tallies were completed, this year’s recipients of the Green Cup Challenge trophy were Rigby House (385 points!) and Brent House (180 points). Congratulations!
