Sports Update: Alpine, Swimming, Volleyball and Hockey

Alpine Skiing: The alpine team participated in its first of four CISAA league meets on January 17th at Mansfield Ski Resort, north of Toronto. The team posted wonderful results in this giant slalom event. The school-trained girls team placed first overall, led by a first-place finish for Léa Jane David Frenette. The school-trained boys team also finished first overall, with the open teams finishing second (girls) and fifth (boys).

Top-10 individual results included:

  • Léa Jane David Frenette – 1st place (girls school-trained)
  • Addy O'Grady – 2nd place (girls open)
  • Aidan Small – 2nd place (boys school-trained)
  • Ally Jiang – 3rd place (girls school-trained)
  • Sophie O'Hea – 5th place (girls open)
  • Emerson Mendum – 8th place (boys school-trained)
  • Nicolas Boisvert – 9th place (boys school-trained)
  • Claudia Churchill – 9th place (girls open)
  • Quinlyn Mendum – 9th place (girls school-trained)
  • Kyle Thomas – 9th place (boys open)

Overall, TCS placed first out of the seven teams taking part in the event.

In the second meet of the year, the Bears continued to have success on the slopes, this time at Alpine Resort (just north of Port Hope) on Wednesday, January 24th. The girls open, girls school-trained and boys school-trained teams also placed first overall, while the boys open team was third.

Top-ten finishes included:

  • Addy O'Grady – 1st place (girls open)
  • Ally Jiang – 1st place (girls school-trained)
  • Aidan Small – 1st place (boys school-trained)
  • Léa Jane David Frenette – 2nd place (girls school-trained)
  • Emerson Mendum – 4th place (boys school-trained)
  • Atticus Hodges – 5th place (boys open)
  • Claudia Churchill – 6th place (girls open)
  • Nicolas Boisvert – 7th place (boys school-trained)
  • Quinlyn Mendum – 8th place (girls school-trained)
  • Kyle Thomas – 9th place (boys open)

Once again, the Bears led the way, placing first overall amongst that eight teams participating in the meet.

Swimming: The Senior School “Water Bears” had their first CISAA meet of the season on January 17th, hitting the pool at the Markham PanAm Centre. The team had stellar results, including a first-place finish in the 4x50m freestyle relay for the Senior girls team (Izzy Smith, Tai Mitchell-Joseph, Dana Hawitt and Sophie Taylor). With Lauren Riihiluoma stepping in for Tai, the Senior girls also swam to second place in the 200m medley relay. And the Junior girls pulled off a third-place finish in their 200m medley relay; congratulations to Morley Clare, Anjali Saunders, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Autumn Taggart.

Top individual results included:

  • Izzy Smith – 1st place in Junior girls 50m freestyle; 1st place in Junior girls 100m individual medley (IM)
  • Sophie Taylor – 2nd place in Senior girls 50m freestyle; 2nd place in Senior girls 100m IM; 3rd place in Senior girls 50m butterfly
  • Dana Hawitt – 3rd place in Senior girls 50m freestyle; 3rd place in Senior girls 100m IM; 3rd place in Senior girls 50m breaststroke
  • Lauren Riihiluoma – 3rd place in Senior girls 50m backstroke

Volleyball: Middleside volleyball posted a dominant 3-0 win (25-12, 25-18, 25-20) over LCS on January 17th. That same day, Bigside lost a close five-set match to LCS at home (20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 10-15).

Hockey: Bigside girls hockey clinched a 4-3 road game win over Greenwood on January 17th.
