Enchanted by the spirit of Halloween

The weather might have been playing tricks, but the costumes were a treat as Trinity College School students and staff were enchanted with the spirit of Halloween on Tuesday, October 31st. The day dawned dark and stormy, and even threw in a few snowflakes, but this didn’t deter the witches, ghosts, goblins and Swifties from coming out in style.

In our wildest dreams we couldn’t have imagine the array of incredible costumes donned by Senior School students for the annual Halloween chapel, led by the school prefects. Harry Potter remained a favourite theme (with a shout-out to “Professor Snape” MacPherson!), and there were plenty of farm animals, food (including a “French baguette”) and even a flying machine. Father Don and Mr. Mills made an appearance, along with Misty the cat. Prizes were given out for best costumes in a range of categories and for best house decorated jack-o-lantern. Students were especially thrilled when staff members danced their way down the aisle dressed in Taylor Swift “Eras” costumes, attended by a security detail.

The chapel was just the latest in a series of seasonal events in the Senior School that included last Friday’s Halloween social hosted by Burns and Bickle House, and Saturday night’s trip to the Brawley Woods Haunted Halloween Walk in Whitby. As well on Saturday, a group of students volunteered their time at the Haute Goat “Ghouly Goat” Spectacular as part of the cast of this haunted farm experience. On Monday, the bell ringers added to the festivities with their annual Phantom of the Handbell concert.

Over at Boulden House, students were certainly excited for Tuesday’s Halloween assembly. But first, Grade 5 students spent some time trick-or-treating around the various administrative offices, much to the delight of staff. Once again this year, our Junior School students outdid themselves in preparation for their costume contest, with lots of athletes, video game and movie characters, and a tribute to Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (replete with a polka dot pumpkin). Following assembly, the students enjoyed class parties and plenty of treats.

To wrap up the Halloween events, on Tuesday evening a group of Senior School students joined Trinity Students for Social Justice to go door-to-door in the neighbourhood collecting donations for the Fare Share Food Bank. A donation of about 1,000 pounds of food was dropped off on Wednesday to help local families in need.

And a special thank you goes out to the volunteers of the TCS Parents’ Guild for their work in preparing and delivering the special Halloween treat packages that were ordered for students and staff.
