Bigside basketball rebounds for strong finish as tournament hosts
  • Girls basketball tip-off

Trinity College School’s Bigside girls basketball team hosted its annual invitational tournament, October 13th and 14th, inviting seven teams to join them on the courts of the Arnold Massey ’55 Athletic Centre.

In addition to TCS, the competition included Lindsay CVI, I.E. Weldon SS (Lindsay), Ange-Gabriel CA (Brockville), Anderson Collegiate (Whitby), St. Peter CSS (Peterborough) and St. Theresa CSS (Belleville).

TCS opened the tournament against Anderson in front of a packed house on Friday night. Joel Wesley (from the School’s IT team) worked the DJ table for the game and helped create a spirited atmosphere. Danny Hickie (Littleside basketball coach) kicked off the night by announcing the starting lineups. Shout-out to the TCS Dance Troupe for its half-time performance.

TCS used the energy of the crowd to jump out to a quick start, however, as the game wore on the Bears began to tire and lose momentum. This opened the door for a comeback and a late lay-up gave Anderson a 22-21 victory in the end. Anna Tenngren scored 9 points and Ella Martins added 4 points for the Bears.

While the TCS team was disappointed in their second-half performance against Anderson, they bounced back on Saturday for their second game, against Lindsay, winning easily, 37-13. Golden Onyekere led the Bears in scoring with 12 points. Charlotte Chan and Liv Healey added 6 and 5 points, respectively.

In the final game of the day, TCS faced CISAA league rival, Appleby College. It was a tightly contested match and Appleby took a one-point lead into the half. The TCS defence clamped down on the Appleby stars in the second half. Maddy Thomas made a pair of driving baskets that helped spark a run by the Bears, who went on to take the victory with a 32-24 win. Ella Martins (8 points) and Savannah Lang (7 points) led the team in scoring.

Congratulations to Ange-Gabriel, who defeated St. Peter in the final to take the tournament championship.
