  • Sports Update: Badminton, Track, Rugby, Tennis & Rowing

The spring sports season is drawing to a close for Trinity College School’s Senior School athletes. Our badminton, rugby, track and tennis teams have been closing out the season in fine fashion, while our rowers are hard at work preparing for their championship regatta.

Badminton: TCS played host to the CISAA Championships in badminton on May 24th and won the overall Bigside co-ed championship on home court! As well, the team of Eason Chen and Jennifer Zhang won the mixed doubles title.

Finishing in second place were the girls #2 doubles team of Chloe Chan and Maddie Goldberg, and the boys #2 doubles team of Darren Du and Jerry Chen. Third-place finishes came from Robin Xu in boys #2 singles, and the boys #1 doubles team of Bruce Duanmu and Silas Hodges.

Well done, Bears!

Track: The Senior School track team headed to the Metro Regional Meet, May 23rd to 25th at Birchmount Stadium, with hopes of qualifying for the OFSAA provincial championships. As Coach Matt Fox noted, “What a hard fought battle from our Metro Regional competitors – seriously, this crew deserves a huge amount of kudos for their grit, effort and achievement.”

Special congratulations go to Aeowyn Comissiong, whose third-place finish in the Junior 80m hurdles has earned her a spot at OFSAA!

Other top-eight finishes at Metros (which contributed points to the team) included:

  • Abby Richards – Novice 1500m run (8th)
  • Jay Turnquest – Junior 400m dash (6th)
  • Aidan Small – Senior 400m dash (7th), Senior 800m run (6th)

Bigside Girls Rugby: The CISAA Division I girls rugby season concluded with a playoff tournament hosted by TCS on May 24th. The Bears started the day strong with a 21-5 win over Hillfield-Strathallan to move into the finals against Appleby, the team’s biggest rivals. As they had done all season, both teams turned in strong performances, with Appleby emerging as champions. TCS captains Jasmine de Pencier and Malinka Kwemo noted, “Despite the setback of losing in the CISAA finals, we were uplifted by the support and cheers from other teams, which fostered a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship. It was truly an empowering experience, providing valuable lessons and growth opportunities for our team.”

Coach Brandon Black was appreciative of all of the teams involved in the season-ending tournament. He said, “The tournament exemplified the spirit of girls’ sports, representing both the power of inclusion and equal opportunity, as well as the essence of rugby itself, a sport that celebrates teamwork, resilience and the pursuit of excellence. Indeed, it was an exciting conclusion to a season that granted athletes the opportunity to forge bonds and create lasting memories both on and off the field.”
