Service Learning Awards celebrate making a difference
  • Service Learning Awards celebrate making a difference

At the core of Trinity College School’s mission is to prepare students for a lifetime of service by empowering them and supporting opportunities to experience the joy of making a difference. Dedication to this endeavour was honoured at the Senior School’s annual Service Learning Awards ceremony, held Thursday, May 25th in the Dick and Jane LeVan Theatre. This event celebrates students’ commitment to the co-curricular service learning program, as well as providing a chance to recognize our peer mentors and stewards.

The ceremony began with the presentation of two special awards. The Armour Memorial Prize is awarded to the editor(s) of The Record, the School’s yearbook. This year’s recipients are Merryn Hamilton and Hannah Hwang. The Pat Moss Society Award was created to honour a student who most embodies the mission of “youth serving youth” and this year’s recipient is Nya Fludzinski.

Each year, students are acknowledged for attaining hours of service with the presentation of ties (denoting the Bronze level, or at least 80 hours of completed service), pins (the Silver level, or a minimum 120 hours of service) and trophies (the Gold level, 200 or more hours of service). This year, 11 Gold recipients were acknowledged, and a further two students earned the top award of Distinction: Isabelle Browne and Oliver Lynn.

Peer mentors have traditionally been appointed in each house to offer support to their fellow students. At Thursday’s ceremony, each of these dedicated students received a special letter from Brian and Joyce Westlake indicating that the Westlake family has made a donation to a local charity in honour of the peer mentors. The Westlakes sponsor this recognition in memory of their son, Andrew ’95.

Stewards hold many important roles around the campus, providing support to educational and operational departments in jobs as varied as offering assistance in the Math Learning Centre to taking photos for school communications. During the 2022-2023 school year, 122 students held stewardships, with 27 of these students recognized for being repeat stewards this year.

Thank you all of the award recipients, to the faculty and staff who support our service learning programs, and to each and every student who has shown commitment to service over the course of the year.
