’Tis the season for giving back

Students and staff at Trinity College School have taken the spirit of the holiday season to heart in recent days, hosting a number of initiatives aimed at giving back to others.

December 1st marked the conclusion of Movember, a month-long international drive to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues. A crew of Senior School students and teachers banded together to grow “Movember moustaches” and/or log their physical activities in the “Move for Movember” initiative.

Also on December 1st, Trinity Students for Social Justice launched its winter clothing drive in support of Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction, an organization that assists Indigenous people who lack housing. The group is collecting items such as winter coats, sleeping bags, tents, gloves, hats, sleeping mats, tarps, winter boots and Tim Hortons/McDonald's gift cards, with donation bins located outside the Clinton Sayers Service Learning Office.

The Senior School’s “Themed Thursday” on December 2nd was hosted by the TCS Trailblazers service learning group, and the theme of “Beach Day” complemented one of the groups for which the club raised funds: Team Seas. Part of the proceeds from the TCS Trailblazer's bake sale and a special lunch it is organizing for faculty will support this organization, which works to remove trash from our seas.

And, on Friday, December 3rd, the Women’s Issues Awareness Club (WIAC) wrapped up its campaign to collect items for the Shoebox Project, creating boxes filled with toiletries and other small items for individuals who identify as women, transgender or non-binary living in shelters.

In the Junior School, in addition to the annual Coats for Kids winter clothing drive which was held in October, more recently the Grade 5 and 6 classes held a bake sale for World Vision. The World Vision catalogue provides options to support people around the world in need, such as purchasing goats and hens for families, or funding clean water. The students raised $1,550, allowing them to purchase their entire wish list!

These are just a few examples of efforts our students have undertaken recently to support organizations both locally and internationally. Well done, Bears!
