Burns freezes out the competition in Senior House Debates

Senior students had the chance to challenge themselves with the impromptu format during the second round of Trinity College School’s House Debates program on Monday, December 29th. Speakers learned the resolution – that “winter is better than summer” – just 20 minutes before the debates began, requiring students to be agile in their thinking.

The top individual Senior debater was Wesley Hoo of Brent House, followed by his partner, Phillip Whan Tong in second place. Charleigh Williamson and Abby Hicks, both of Wright House, tied for third, while Ketchum’s Kamsy Onyekere stood in fourth place. Wesley and Phillip comprised the top team, followed by Charleigh and Abby. Rounding out the top three teams was the Scott House pairing of Savanna Barker and Ebube Onyeka.

The top Senior house of the day was Burns with two wins. Rigby House maintained its overall lead in the Senior standings, with a record of three wins and one tie through two rounds of debate. Burns House is close behind at three wins and one loss.

In the Junior ranks, students took part in a researched debate on the resolution that “schools should get rid of grades.” The top individual was Bethune’s Haron Wang, with Gisele Caraballo Diaz of Ketchum House in second place. There was a three-way tie for third place amongst Rigby’s Alexis Stewart, Scott’s Dalayna Baker, and Tushar Shaji of Bickle House. Fourth spot went to Kendra McAlpine, who gave Wright House top team honours with her partner, Kennedy Belfon. Rigby House took the second and third place spots with Alexis and Kenyon Stewart as runners-up, followed by the team of Lila Beggs and Aeowyn Comissiong. A testament to how competitive the Junior debates were, just two points separated the top three teams!

Rigby was the top Junior house and top overall house in the second round of debate, with a combined record of three wins and one tie by its Junior and Senior teams. But it is Scott House that sits atop the Junior standings after two rounds of debate with three wins and one loss.

Congratulations to all of the debaters. We look forward to resuming the House Debates program in the new year!
