Students in Trinity College School’s DECA Chapter took part in a virtual version of the regional competition for private schools over the weekend of November 21st, and now await the results with “fingers crossed.”
DECA is an international business program for young people that instills professionalism and prepares youth to respond to authentic business cases and market demands through conferences and competitions. Ontario has more than 9,000 student members.
For our TCS participants, DECA competitions are experiential learning opportunities that support the development of 21st century skills. DECA membership reached a new high at the School this year, with 56 students involved, the most members the chapter has ever had. Members range from Grade 9 through 12, including both boarders and day students. The chapter has been meeting on Wednesday afternoons preparing for the competition with interactive and fun training sessions led by the chapter executives: Grade 12 students Kyle Munns, Michael Yip and Ben Ma, and Grade 11 student Riley Christensen.
As chapter co-president Kyle Munns notes, “Regionals is where the work of everyone in the chapter pays off. DECA TCS members showed exceptional development in their speaking and presenting skills over the term, and we are excited to see their results.”
Michael Yip, co-president, adds, “DECA TCS is more than a business club. It's a place where incredible people with different passions intersect. It might be an unusual year, but our members have prepared well for regionals.”
During the regional competition, DECA TCS members competed against over 1,500 students across the region, with the hope of earning a place at the provincial competition, which will also be virtual this year. Top place winners and qualifiers for provincials will be announced during a province-wide virtual regionals awards ceremony tentatively scheduled to take place during the first week of December.
