Embracing our shared humanity through reading

Trinity Reads, Trinity College School’s summer reading program, returned to the Senior School this fall, albeit with a refreshing new format for the program’s ninth year. Although some modifications were made in light of the increased demand on student energy this summer, the School continues to champion reading, recognizing its role in developing empathy and compassion, increasing vocabulary and fostering a love of learning, and, perhaps more importantly than ever, allowing us to appreciate another’s experience: “It’s not until we know the stories of each other that we embrace our humanity” – Ezra Hyland, teaching specialist.

Over the summer, students were asked to read any book they could source, with recommendations provided. This list of suggestions was developed in partnership with students, who provided valuable input about how the program could be improved, and with a keen eye to diversity of authors, subjects, themes and characters.

For the first time since Trinity Reads began in 2012, readers met in their advisor groups, allowing for a new and interesting way for advisees to connect. Feedback about the discussions, which took place on Friday, September 18th, has been very positive, and photos from the groups attest to the important role reading can play in building relationships at the start of the school year.
