The importance of kindness, empathy and giving back to our communities has never been so clear as it is right now. In this spirit, the School honoured dedication to the Senior School service learning program during the 2019-2020 academic year via a pre-recorded presentation on Thursday, May 28th.
While this was not our traditional Service Learning Awards event, as our students remain scattered around the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s presentation held its own distinctive meaning. The video included the voices of faculty, staff and students, as well as a couple of special guests! TCS Chaplain, Canon Don Aitchison made an appearance from his current deployment with the Canadian Forces as part of Operation LASER, and past parents Brian and Joyce Westlake sent a message to our peer support students. The Westlakes will individually acknowledge our peer support students and will be making a donation to our local Northumberland Fare Share Food bank in their names. In each of the 10 Senior School houses, peer support students serve as a resource for their classmates, actively listening and helping students to access support and resources within the School.
Students holding stewardships at the School were recognized for their commitment, with 59 students earning their steward tie for the first time, and 15 students recognized as repeat recipients.
Each year, students are recognized for attaining hours of service with the presentation of ties (denoting the bronze level, or at least 80 hours of completed service), pins (the silver level, or a minimum 120 hours of service) and Distinction trophies (the gold level, 200 or more hours of service). A total of 109 students were so honoured this year, including 23 students earning Distinction at the gold level. Eleven of these students were earning gold for at least the second time.
The presentation also included two special awards: the Armour Memorial Prize for yearbook editor went to Nicole Wang; and the Pat Moss Society Award, which signifies a student who embodies the mission of “youth helping youth,” was presented to Chloe Chiang.
Thank you to our students for their ongoing commitment to service, including those who have continued to embrace the School’s mission of developing habits of the heart and mind for a life of purpose and service during this time of social distancing.
