Dancers “Get Up” for a high-energy show!

Trinity College School’s dancers – and their guests – performed a high energy show for an enthusiastic audience the evening of Tuesday, March 4th in the Dick and Jane Theatre. Entitled Get Up!, this year’s show was jam-packed with numbers from a broad range of dance styles, from hip hop to jazz and Bollywood to ballet.

The TCS Dance Troupe, an auditioned group, met several times each week during the fall and winter terms to choreograph and practice under the leadership of their coaches, Ms. Stephanie Booth (Premiere Dance Cobourg), Ms. Rachel McHolm and Ms. Maria Velasquez-Labrecque. The troupe includes Subaru Fujimoto, Liesl Ge, Lily Lai, Amélie Lynn, Ashley Jung, Megan Zammit, and dance captains Nita Das and Waverley DiNova.

The Dance Crew, which is open to any student, is led by TCS alumnus Katie Traugott ’17. This year’s members included Leo Ali-Ngindu, Lulu Alcocer Madrigal, Rachel Bailey, Jasmine de Pencier, Mimi Grieve, Abigail Hicks, Dagna Jezioro, Emma Radley, Danny Raskind, Cindy Shui, Harry Varty and Lizzie Wadds.

Throughout the show, the students performed solo and group numbers, many of which had been choreographed by the students themselves. As well, they welcomed guest dancers from the local community and from TCS. These included Ella Booth-Doris, Dominic Angelo, Jasmine Wilson, Camden Leroux, Gillian Desormeaux, Roman Puccia, Jessica Lee, Georgia Lee, and TCS students Abi Aicardi, Ruby Campbell, Alexa Goldberg, Charisse Lee, Roselle Torres and Summer Xia. A special treat was the chance to watch Olivia, daughter of staff members Jennifer and Andrew Petrolito, perform. Guest choreographers, in addition to Ms. Booth and Ms. Traugott, included Monika DeSuza, Christyna McGregor and Alysha Ruby.

The dancers delighted the audience throughout the evening, from Nita’s opening number, Bollywood Fusion, through to the full group performance of Slow Dance to close the show.

In addition to the hard work put in by the dancers and coaches over many weeks, the show was made possible by the efforts of many people. Promotion was handled by Nita and Waverley (who also produced the slideshow shown during the performance), Amélie designed the poster and Megan the headshots board. Ms. Zoe Walwyn took the headshots and Mr. Chris Robert photographed many practices. Student volunteers Emma Aitchison-Madill, Olivia Dagher, Rati Dube, Eleanor Hargraft and Julia Steele helped keep things running smoothly, while Mr. Christian McFadden oversaw the soundboard and Mr. Victor Svenningson ’74 ran the lighting. Finally, thanks go to the arts department, including Ms. Jessie Ironside and Mr. Bill Walker, for its support.

Congratulations to all of the dancers on producing a fun, energetic and compelling evening of dance, and a special shout-out to Nita and Liesl, our two graduating dancers, for their dedication to the program over the years.
