Debate team competes across the province

Trinity College School’s debate team had a busy – and successful – weekend attending competitions across the province of Ontario, February 21st through 23rd.

On Saturday, Ms. Gillian Scott accompanied a team of four representatives to the Fulford League’s winter debate tournament at De La Salle College Oaklands in Toronto. In the Senior division, Raphaella Bergeron Hartman and Jack Zhang competed, while TianTian Dong and Isolde Ardies represented TCS in the Junior division. Fulford events use the parliamentary style of debate, and while all Senior debates are impromptu, Juniors debate both in impromptu and researched formats, with this winter’s prepared resolution being on the issue of gun control. All of the debaters performed well, with the team finishing eighth overall.

TCS was well-represented at this year’s Ontario Student Debating Union Senior Provincial Championships, held over three days at Ottawa’s Ashbury College. Kyle Munns and Loretta Hu attended the tournament, along with debate team coach, Mr. Greg MacPherson. The OSDU features several different debate formats, including both impromptu and researched resolutions (this year’s prepared motion was on the topic of foreign ownership of telecommunications companies). Our TCS debaters did very well, improving nine places from last year.

TCS is proud of its foundational role in both the Fulford League and the OSDU. Thank you to all of the student debaters and coaches who represented the School over the weekend!
