Crowded leaderboard leads to House Debates tiebreakers

The fourth and final preliminary round of Trinity College School’s House Debates saw Senior students warming up to the challenging impromptu format. Senior debaters learned the resolution – that “the School’s holidays are too long” – minutes before debates began on Tuesday, January 28th. The Junior division had a research-based debate that argued “the TCS school day should start later.”

The Junior ranks saw Emily Brown of Ketchum House as the top individual, followed by Merryn Hamilton of Wright House and a third place tie between Taley He of Burns House and Peter Hassard of Hodgetts House. Taley He and teammate Viana Biscoe were the top Junior team of the day, followed by Emily Brown and Nikola Lee in second place and Merryn Hamilton and Marie-Anne Urrutia in third place.

Bethune, Ketchum, Scott and Wright were the top Junior houses of the day with one win and one tie apiece.

In the Senior division, Raphaella Bergeron Hartman from Ketchum House was the top individual debater. Kit Cheung of Brent House took second place while Jack Zhang from Bickle House stood third. Jack Zhang and partner Michael Yip were the top Senior team with an impressive 216 points. Wright House’s Isabella Ciano and Ainsley Poles took second place and Loretta Hu and Carly Lin from Burns House finished in third place.

Brent, Hodgetts and Wright were the top Senior houses of the day with two wins apiece.

Combining Junior and Senior results, Wright was the top house of the day with three wins and one tie.

As a result of ties, both divisions will feature a debate-off to determine who qualifies for the semi-finals. A tie-breaker between Ketchum and Rigby will send one house to the semi-finals against Hodgetts, Orchard and Wright in the Junior division. The Senior division will see Rigby, Scott and Wright in the semi-finals against the winner of a debate-off between Bickle and Hodgetts.
