  • TCS team places second in engineering contest

March is National Engineering Month and a group of 19 Trinity College School students from Grades 11 and 12 celebrated by participating in the Peterborough Engineering Challenge on March 7th. The event allows students to test themselves by addressing aspects of real-world engineering problems. At the end of the day, one TCS team came away with a second-place award!

The competition drew 158 high school students from the area, each working in teams of three to four on a bridge-building project. The challenge was to use the supplies provided to create a bridge covering a 50cm span, and maintaining enough clearance for a toy car to pass through. Bridges were judged based on the weight load they were able to hold while still meeting these criteria. Points were also awarded for design, construction, performance and knowledge displayed by each project.

The team of Tanay Langhe, Ben Semmler, Andrew Richards and Ryan Lu earned second place out of the 38 teams competing, as their bridge was able to withstand a load of 65 pounds.

Other TCS teams included:

  • Malinka Kwemo, Asseel Abdalla, Danie Green, Lily Wright
  • Christina Jia, Alicia Wang, Eurus Wu, Sarah Inglis
  • Amelia Maggi, Kyra Fingas, Colin Fraser
  • Xenia Blankenburg, Hebe Lu, Mika Romao Vandepol, Sara Yang

The students had great fun working collaboratively to solve problems, and enjoyed meeting peers from local schools with a shared interest in applied science and math. They also had the opportunity to meet with professional engineers and technologists who hosted the event as a way to attract more young people to careers in these fields.
