Junior School Library
The Junior School library brings together all members of our community. Over the years this beautiful space has evolved to meet the changing needs of our students, staff and even parents. It is indeed a place where students are at the forefront of its design and function.
With the generous support of Junior School families, the library has undergone a major renovation. It reflects the need for flexible work spaces, comfortable nooks for reading, relaxing, and hanging out, a dedicated teaching space, as well as a current and relevant collection of resources, both print and digital.
The collection of resources is thoughtfully developed to support the classroom curriculum, and to encourage a love of reading for pleasure in all our students. The teacher librarian works closely with students and teachers to maintain a collection that is current, relevant and diverse. In this way, the collection includes books that can be a window, door and/or mirror for our young readers, reflecting their own experiences, as well as opening them up to the lives of others.
Students are independent users of the library, with book searching and self-checkout available at the circulation desk. They also have access, while on or off campus, to our online library system which offers links to databases, websites and image searching sites to help with research; our digital library of e-books and audiobooks; and information about new and popular books.
Each class has a library period built into its schedule when students spend time with the teacher librarian, developing important information literacy skills, learning to use the physical and online library, as well as sharing their reading with each other.
The library is designed to meet a variety of student and teacher needs. It should be a place where members of our community feel welcome, supported and connected. While reading and research are certainly an important focus, the Junior School library is much more than the books on the shelves. In the words of some of our students, the library is a place to feel at home, smile, be calm and comfortable, and relieve stress.
