Bethune and Orchard win House Debate titles
  • Bethune and Orchard win House Debate titles

Trinity College School’s House Debates program wrapped up this week with the Senior and Junior division finals.

On Monday, April 3rd, Senior finalists took to the stage of the Dick and Jane LeVan Theatre during afternoon flex block, to debate the resolution that “Confucius was correct when he stated, ‘Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.’” Representing the proposition for Bethune House were Oliver Lynn and Tanay Langhe, while Michael Moreau and Phillip Whan Tong comprised the opposition for Brent House.

In a unanimous decision, the judges – Dr. Greg Hodges, Mr. Greg MacPherson and Canon Don Aitchison – awarded the Tom Lawson Senior House Debate Trophy to Bethune House.

The following day, April 4th, it was our Junior debaters’ turn to take the stage. This time, students argued the resolution that “social media organizations should be regulated by the government.” Arguing for the resolution were Rigby House’s Hibah Tahir and Linden Wylie, while Orchard House’s Nicolas Shi and Roger Zhang took up the opposition.

A testament to the competitiveness of the debate, it was a split decision amongst judges, Ms. Andrea Mathieson, Mr. Danny Hickie and Mr. Keith Brooks. Ultimately, Orchard House prevailed to win the Dr. Michael T. DuBroy Junior House Debate Trophy.

Congratulations to the finalists and to all of the students who embraced the challenge of representing their houses in debating this year. And hats off to the winners from Bethune and Orchard House!
