Arts students take a bite out of the Big Apple

A group of 19 Trinity College School students from Senior School music, visual arts and drama courses travelled with Mr. Bill Walker and myself to New York City over the break weekend, November 10th-14th, to experience this vibrant city.

We walked extensively, covering over 60 kilometres in three days, and travelling through many parts of the city, including Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Central Park, admiring the sights.

The group enjoyed visiting both the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, where they were able to view works such as Monet’s Water Lilies and Starry Night by Van Gogh. There was also a Steve Miller concert, part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program, featuring truly an epic rock and blues performance by the 79-year-old musician.

Students and chaperones alike were moved to both laughter and tears by the off-Broadway production of A Man of No Importance starring Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory. And a highlight of the weekend was attending the sold-out show, Beetlejuice, on Broadway.

We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square and experienced the singing waiters and waitresses at Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway, which is a breeding ground for future Broadway stars.

In addition to the many arts-related activities, the group was also able to experience other aspects of the city. This included a moving visit to the 9/11 Memorial pools that sit in the footprints of the former North and South World Trade Center Towers. Students also had the chance to shop at Rockefeller Center, and enjoyed a walk on the High Line to the waterfront to see the Statue of Liberty.

It was a wonderful weekend, packed with fun adventures, and prompting many great conversations amongst students and chaperones about the artistic works and performances they experienced.
