International Women’s Day celebrates achievements and promotes equality

In advance of International Women’s Day, the Trinity College School community took the opportunity to recognize this important celebration of the achievements of women on Tuesday, March 5th.

International Women’s Day dates back to the early 1900s, and in 1975 was formally marked by the United Nations. With the official date falling annually on March 8th (this year during the School’s March Break), International Women’s Day not only promotes women’s accomplishments and contributions, but also encourages support of women (e.g., through patronage of women-owned businesses or donations to women-focused non-profits and charities) and actions to promote gender equality. This year’s theme is #InspireInclusion.

In the Junior School, students and staff were asked to wear the colour purple on Tuesday, and then in chapel service on Wednesday, March 6th had the chance to learn more about International Women’s Day. The Allies Against Racism and Discrimination group produced a short video encouraging the Junior School community to support the theme of #InspireInclusion.

In the Senior School, Tuesday’s non-uniform day was expanded to include the colour options of purple, green or white. Women’s Issues Awareness Club (WIAC) led the way in educating their peers on the importance of this day.

As WIAC leader Charlotte Belanger noted in an email, “TCS is honouring the hard work and dedication of thousands of generations of women before us today. This day celebrates women’s achievements in all aspects of society. From social reformer Emmeline Pankhurst to Olympic champion Wilma Rudolph and economist Anna Jacobson Schwartz, women’s participation in various fields have shaped the world that we live in today.”

WIAC encouraged students and staff to take this time to think about the work still to be done to achieve true gender parity and improve the lives of women around the world. “Closing gender gaps is a challenging yet attainable goal that days like today focus on working toward,” Charlotte said. “We encourage you to spend the day reflecting on the work of women in society, supporting women-owned businesses, celebrating the women in your family and informing yourself on actions you can take to support women around you.”

A flag in recognition of International Women’s Day was added to the display in Cirne Commons as well as at Boulden House.
