Collaborative effort shines light on sustainability

The annual Sustainability Showcase at Trinity College School was a collaborative effort to spotlight many ways we can all do “more good” (MOGO) for the environment. Coordinated by the Sustainability Office, each day between November 20th to 23rd students and staff could visit Cirne Commons to see displays and speak with people in our school community involved in sustainability initiatives.

Monday, the showcase kicked off with the theme of “Food.” The SEEDS service learning group, led by science teacher Suzanne Hamilton, presented an “apple orchard taste test” where students could sample eight different varieties. The TCS Apiary Club, which is led by faculty member Greg Hodges, hosted a honey tasting. Both of these groups work to produce food by maintaining the gardens and bee hives right here on campus. Science teacher Tim Clutton lent his vermicomposter so everyone could learn more about composting with worms.

Tuesday was all about textiles and fashion, starting with an informative chapel presentation by Trinity Environmental Action Club (TEAC). Teacher Paige Kobe and Grade 11 student Romy Belisle hosted a “how to knit” session in Cirne, while Viola Lyons and the upcycling group she leads showcased some fun ways to upcycle used clothing and fabrics. Alison Elliott, TCS director of sustainability programs, helped everyone visualize climate data using a “temperature loom.”

Technology was the focus on day three of the showcase, with Tesla-driving staff members Myke Healy, David Iaonnou and John Anderson providing a demo on EV cars. Science teacher Justin Murphy and Grade 12 student Andrew Richards shared their knowledge of environmental technology and gadgets.

Thursday wrapped up with “all things MOGO,” including a “Shoot for Sustainability” waste sorting game hosted by TEAC, a showing of the film The Lorax, and MOGO displays by several of the Senior School houses, led by the house green reps.

Throughout the week there were fun guessing games and draws for prizes in conjunction with the showcase.

Thank you to everyone involved in the showcase, including our sustainability stewards, for helping us all to know more and, ultimately, do more good for our planet!
