Seeds group shares an abundant harvest
  • Students holding wheelbarrows filled with pumpkins and butternut squash

Students in the fall 2023 Seeds service learning group at Trinity College School have done an amazing job of harvesting the fruits and vegetables planted by last spring’s Seeds group and the Grade 11 Biology course students.

The group is very excited to now have eight planter boxes, in addition to the “big garden” by The Lodge and the two new Hugelkultur mounds (a form of raised bed that promotes permaculture) made by students and Mr. Campbell Hall during Week Without Walls, in December 2022.

In late September, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, sunflowers, red and green kale were harvested from the planter boxes. Cosmos flowers, jack o’ lantern pumpkins, pie pumpkins and squash grew in abundance in the big garden.

The entire school benefited from the efforts of these students as the harvested fruits and vegetables made their way into several wonderful dishes served in Osler Hall, such as garden vegetable pasta and pumpkin pies. Additional pumpkins and squash were available for people to take home for the Thanksgiving Break, to enjoy with their families.

Students are currently working hard to amend the soil with natural mushroom compost and prepare these areas to rest over the winter.

Many thanks to the facilities department for all of their support with this program and to the culinary services team, the sustainability office and service learning office. And thank you from the entire School to the Seeds group and faculty leader Suzanne Hamilton for sharing their abundant harvest!
